What Causes Deep Vein Thrombosis? Its Symptoms And Natural Cures

There are a host of causes or high risk factors that are associated with the development of deep vein thrombosis. In most cases, the condition is usually asymptomatic, however, deep vein thrombosis needs to be treated promptly, especially in the elderly, as it may increase the changes of stroke or infarction, especially if the thrombus gets logged into an important artery supplying to the heart or the brain.

Deep vein thrombosis is a condition characterized by formation of a blood clot in a larger vein. While this condition may not be associated with any symptoms and may resolve naturally, it may also result in serious complications, especially if the thrombus dislodges from the original site and may travel to the heart or lungs. This condition may in turn result in a more life threatening condition called pulmonary or cardiac embolism.

While this condition affects one in 1000 adults. In the United States the condition affects 300,000 to 600,000 individuals annually, while approximately 60,000 to 100,000 deaths are attributed to its complication i.e. pulmonary embolism.

Causes Of Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis is attributed to Virchow’s triad a condition characterized by three factors, reduced flow rate of the blood, damage of the blood vessel wall and higher tendency to formation of blood clots.

These factors can result in formation of deep vein thrombosis in the veins of the legs. Some of the common risk factors associated with the development of deep vein thrombosis include the following,

  • Old age is considered to be a high risk factor. Prevalence of deep vein thrombosis increases with advancing age.

  • Pregnancy and post-partum is also associated with higher risk of deep vein thrombosis.
  • Injury and trauma are also associated with deep vein thrombosis.
