Stomach Pain After Eating Red Meat: Causes And How To Prevent?

Red meat is widely consumed food all over the world. In fact in some countries it is known to be the staple food. One of the reasons is its easy availability. The meat derived from beef, lamb, pork, sheep and goat is called red meat. Although red meat contains many nutrients and is rich source of protein, there are many health related problems related to red meat.

In some people eating red meat can cause reaction in the form of stomach pain, diarrhea and many other gastrointestinal troubles. If you suffer from stomach pain after eating red meat repeatedly, you should consult your doctor. If it is a onetime problem, probably this may be due to food poisoning issue.

Not all who consume red meat suffer from stomach pain, diarrhea and vomiting etc. But there are few individuals who have an allergy to red meat. If you are allergic to red meat you may suffer from gastrointestinal symptoms such as stomach pain, diarrhea and in severe allergy cases other systemic problems such as breathlessness etc.

Causes Of Stomach Pain After Eating Red Meat

If you are prone to red meat allergy even slight amount of its consumption can lead to stomach pain. As with other allergies, it is not the protein present in red meat which causes allergy, but on the other hand, carbohydrate present in red meat is to be blamed. Body’s immune system recognizes the carbohydrate to be foreign substance and begins to react by producing histamine and antibodies. These substances react with the body system and cause inflammation of intestinal lining leading to stomach cramps, vomiting, gases, diarrhea etc.

Stomach pain in abdomen is also related to intolerance of red meat. Intolerance towards a particular food occurs when enzymes produced by the body to break down the proteins in the food are deficient. Thus the protein present in red meat is not digested and as a result it causes irritation and inflammation of stomach and intestine. The precipitating symptoms may occur in the form of bloating, gasses, and abdominal cramps few hours after eating red meat.

Symptoms Of Stomach Ache After Eating Meat

Food poisoning after eating red meat is common. The symptoms of stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea and nausea occur two to six hours after eating red meat contaminated with bacteria, toxin and other harmful germs. Eating uncooked red meat, meat prepared without taking hygienic precautions is more prone to cause food poisoning symptoms.

Consuming excess of red meat in one meal can also be a simple reason for causing discomfort and pain in abdomen. Too much of red meat may take time to be processed by enzymes. If the meat remains for a longer time without being processed, it may cause irritation in the gut leading to cramps and gases in stomach and intestine.

Preventing Stomach Pain Due To Red Meat

If you suffer sporadic episode of stomach pain after eating red meat, this may be just due to slight deviation from health caused as a result of eating in excess. In such situation giving rest to stomach and intestine for few hours will gradually alleviate the problem.

If red meat allergy is suspected to be the cause, avoid eating red meat in your diet to prevent further episodes. Instead of red meat there are various other alternative foods to provide equal amount of nutrients. Try to eat eggs, chicken, fish and other white meat items.

Avoid eating uncooked or half cooked red meat to prevent stomach pain food poisoning. Maintain good personal hygiene. Wash your hands with soap and water after visiting toilet. Do not eat red meat which is not cooked in good sanitary conditions.

    After eating red meat I become sick. I suffer from stomach cramps and diarrhea 30 minutes or one hour after eating. Previously I used to eat red meat without any problem, but now it does not suit my GI tract. What is another option for natural iron if I do not eat red meat? My doctor suggests I must eat meat to increase my iron level in blood.

      Many people have intolerance towards one food or another. They avoid eating such food. If you are intolerant to red meat, you can try many other options in your diet. Eggs, fish, chicken etc are also good source of vital nutrients including iron.
