Burning Sensation in Throat

A burning sensation in the throat is a common complaint and it is usually brought on by a condition known as Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), also called Acid Reflux. Different people are going to have different GERD triggers, but the symptoms are the same and it usually involves the burning sensation in the throat.

What Causes a Burning Sensation in the Throat?

GERD is the main cause of a burning pain in the throat. As the stomach acid goes back up the esophagus, it irritates the walls and causes esophagitis or the inflammation of the esophagus. Reflux can occur for no particular reason, but several factors can predispose a patient to experiencing this issue, those factors include:

  • Obesity
  • Pregnancy
  • Chronic Alcohol Intake.
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Eating Spicy Foods
  • Eating Too Much Too Quickly.
  • Eating Fatty Foods

Symptoms that may accompany burning in the throat for patients who have GERD include the following.

  • Bad Breath
  • Indigestion
  • Hoarseness
  • Sour or Bitter Taste in the Mouth.

Patients with GERD may also experience chest pain and breathing difficulties. These can be worrying symptoms and when experienced, patients need to report it to their healthcare provider as these also are signs of a heart attack.

In addition to Gastro-esophageal Reflux, this problem may also be reported by patients who have Bulimia or any other condition that leads to constant throwing up.

Burning Sensation in the Throat Treatment

There are a number of ways to treat GERD and to prevent the occurrence of a burning sensation in the throat, these include:

  • Antacids. These can include drugs like Sodium Bicarbonate. They work by neutralizing the stomach acid and preventing the burning in the throat sensation.
  • Proton Pump Inhibitors. These block the production of stomach acid.

Some home remedies that patients can check out include:

  • Ginger Tea or Chamomile Tea. This helps to soothe the stomach. Mint teas are not recommended though as they may have a relaxing effects on the GI sphincters, which can make the GERD worse.
  • Baking Soda and Honey. Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes the stomach acids and honey makes the baking soda more palatable.
  • Lemon juice and Water or Apple Cider Vinegar and Water. These are said to help neutralize the acids in the stomach.

Preventing a GERD attack is also possible, some effective methods include:

  • Eating smaller, more frequent meals.
  • Avoid GERD triggers (this can include fatty foods and salty foods).
  • Reduce alcohol intake.
  • Avoid Stress
  • Get enough rest.
  • Quit Smoking
  • Avoid sugary foods, including carbonated sodas.
  • Drink enough water.
