What are the Causes of Frequent Nosebleeds in Toddlers

Though nose bleed is a very traumatic event for the child and parents, often it can be easily management at home. Nose bleeds are rarely associated with underlying severe pathology in the child and home remedies can help in cases of recurrent nose bleed in children.

What Causes Nose Bleed in Toddlers?

Though there are several causes associated with nosebleed in children and toddlers here are some of the common causes that can result in nosebleed,

  • Trauma is often associated with bleeding.
    Blowing the nose too hard or pushing something up the nose, may result in nose bleed due to trauma. Bleeding doesn’t indicate that something is broken inside, expect for the veins that have been damaged due to the trauma
  • Nose picking is a common cause of nosebleed in children as the blood vessels tend to get irritated and results in bleeding
  • Sinus infection, cold or nasal allergies result in nasal congestion which may be responsible for nose bleed
  • Bacterial infection in the nasal lining may result in nose bleeds. Bacteria tend to irritate the nasal lining and the blood vessels which in turn can cause bleeding

Some of the more serious but rare conditions associated with nose bleed in toddlers include blood clotting disorder, which may often require immediate medical supervision. Hypertension may result in nosebleed in adults and is rarely associated with nosebleed in toddlers and children.

Frequent nose bleeds in Children

Some children may suffer from frequent episodes of nose bleed. A few nosebleeds are not a matter of concern however frequent nosebleeds, about a few times a month may be worrisome and a cause of concern for the parents

Frequent nosebleeds are attributed to irritation in the lining of the nose, which may result in leave the blood vessels supplying the nose exposed. This will cause bleeding on the slightest irritation. The nasal septum is the most common part of the nose which is associated with chronic irritation and frequent nosebleeds

However it is recommended that the child be thoroughly investigated and examined for any blood dyscarsia or local nasal problems which might be responsible for frequent nose bleeds

Nosebleed in Toddlers Treatment

Simple treatment at home can help alleviate the bleeding experienced in children,

  • Apply gentle pressure to hasten coagulation and clotting of the blood and stop bleeding. Squeeze the nose with a cloth for about five to ten minutes and open the child’s mouth and ask him/her to breathe through the mouth.
  • Apply ice on the nose to reduce the blood flow to the nose which in turn stops the bleeding.
  • Lay the child down with the head tilted backwards. This will prevent the blood to flow out through the nose against gravity.
  • Apply Vaseline or moisturizer inside the nose. This will keep the nasal lining moist and healthy and prevent frequent bleeding
  • Homeopathic drugs like Phosphorus and Sepia are very effective in reducing passive bleeding as they improve the circulation and reduce congestion.
