Loss of the sense of taste or ageusia is a symptom of certain conditions such as sinusitis, infection in the salivary gland, and gastroesophegeal reflux disease. This can also be caused by some drugs and poor dental hygiene.

This condition occurs when there is interference in the taste signals into the brain.

This problem is often complete but would be resolved after some time. Furthermore, there are digestive symptoms that can be associated with the occurrence of loss of taste, including

There are home remedies that can be helpful in curing and improving the taste sensation, which include the following:

  • Have different food with varying taste.

    One can eat foods with contrasting tastes and preparation such as sour and sweat, or cold and hot. For example, an individual can consume ice cream with hot cakes. This makes the food more interesting. Colorful food can also add to its appeal.

  • Prepare food by adding more spices and flavor to bring in more taste and zest.

  • When eating, chew food thoroughly as this would enhance digestion, and slow breakdown of food in the mouth releases its flavor.

  • Taking zinc supplement can improve the taste since deficiency in zinc has a negative effect with the taste.

  • Consume only freshly prepared food and avoid eating stale ones.

  • To improve the taste, about 10 grams of ginger powder boiled in a half liter of water can provide positive effects.

  • Pulverized inner layer of pomegranate can be mixed with honey. Take this mixture to help enhance the sense of taste.

  • Lime juice with ginger juice and a pinch of salt mixed with food can help treat loss of taste.
