  • It is very common for us to experience tonsil pain, mainly because they have the upper respiratory tract infection.

  • The pain on one side of the tonsils is experienced before the fever and cold.

  • People of all ages may suffer from the said condition but it is more common in children than in adults.

    The reason why tonsillitis is common to children than to adult, it is because the immune system role of the tonsils of the children changes after they experience puberty.

  • The inflammation or swelling of the tonsils is because of some viral infections and sometimes accompanied by the common cold.

Causes of the Pain on a Tonsil

There is no exact cause of the pain on one side of the tonsils. Climate changes can also be the cause of the pain and also the immune system of an individual. Health care providers said that throat abscess or the pus in the throat also called the Peritonsillar abscess can be the main cause of the pain on one side of the throat. However peritonsillar abscess or the pain on one side of the throat is more common in adults than in children.

These are some causes of the pain on one side of the tonsil:

  • Presence of chicken pox

  • The Common cold

  • Diphtheria

  • Infection due to bacteria

  • Too much drinking of alcohol or hot drinks, etc.

  • Shouting

  • Presence of measles

  • Infection due to virus

  • Mouth breathing

  • Direct contact to a person with tonsillitis

How to Prevent Tonsil Pain

Here is a list of home remedies on how to get rid of the tonsil pain.

  • Lime. is proven to treat and cure tonsillitis. Together with a glass of warm water, squeeze the lime and add about four teaspoon of honey.

  • For three consecutive nights, drink a glass of boiled milk, add turmeric powder and pepper powder.

  • Salt water. Gargle water with a pinch of salt. It helps prevent accumulation of tonsil stones.

  • Water and orange juice therapy. For three days, the patient should try to intake nothing but water and orange juice.

  • Avoid spices and sour foods.

  • Drink plenty of water. 8-10 glasses a day is recommended

  • Humidify the air. Use a vaporizer or humidifier to add some moisture that prevents the dryness of the throat.

  • Cold pack. A cold pack must be put on the patient’s throat

  • Sleep and rest. A good amount of rest/sleep is recommended especially for children.
