Wisdom teeth are placed on the farthest edges of the inner jaw line. These teeth are considered the third molars of the set. Normally, there are only four wisdom teeth but there have been reports of additional sets in some people. There are also instances wherein some wisdom teeth remain underneath the gums.

These four teeth usually emerge at the age of 16 to 25 years old. Between this range, the wisdom tooth intends to break through from the gums and move the placement of other teeth. A wisdom tooth can affect the nearby teeth because it forces its way out in a different angle. The pressure brought by the wisdom tooth can break the tooth beside it. This can inflict serious pain on the individual, as the pulp is deeply innervated.

Normally, wisdom teeth do not come out of a person’s gums simultaneously. Oftentimes, every wisdom tooth comes out one by one. The severity of pain felt depends on a person’s pain tolerance.

Most of the time however, an impacted wisdom tooth never fails to cause severe pain. However, a person will be able to determine a growing wisdom tooth if the following symptoms are present:

  • Swelling of the gums
  • Pain while eating
  • Stiffness of the jaw
  • Tingling sensation between the cheeks.

On the other hand, an impacted wisdom tooth can also cause pain to individuals experiencing this discomfort. Symptoms of wisdom teeth pain includes:

  • Swollen and bleeding gums
  • Unpleasant taste
  • Facial swelling
  • Bad breath
  • Headache
  • Excruciating teeth pain
  • Swelling around the jaw area
  • Stiffness of the jaw

Wisdom Teeth Pain Relief

There are a lot of natural ways to stop wisdom teeth pain. Since these are natural treatments, individuals do not have to worry of incurring possible side effects. Relief for wisdom tooth pain includes the following:

  • Peppermint Leaves. Dried peppermint leaves can be placed on the gums for 15 minutes at least 10 times a day. This can lessen the pain and minimize the presence of lesions up to surface the gums. Keep the dried leaves inside the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes to achieve the desired effects.
  • Cucumber slices. The cool and soothing feel of the cucumber slices can alleviate pain. Place them inside the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes to soothe the painful gums.
  • Ice. Sucking or putting an ice on the gum line can make the area numb.
  • Garlic and Salt Pack. This is a famous old remedy. Thin slices of garlic topped with salt and chewed for 20 minutes can alleviate the pain.
