What is Leucoderma?

Leucoderma or vitiligo is a condition characterized by abnormal while spots and patches on the skin. These are caused the death or malfunction of melanocytes which are the cells responsible for the pigmentation of the skin. This condition is rare, affecting less than 1% of the entire population in the world.

The patient will not experience pain on these patches although these make him/her more vulnerable to the sun. Thus, patients are often advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun or at least use protective gear and sun block.

Also, even without the physical pain, those who have vitiligo often have to suffer emotional trauma and stress from the stigma that arises from the condition. Often, those who do not know what vitiligo is would think that it is a contagious disease, especially when it could seem like leprosy to the untrained eye. Thus, many patients suffering from this condition would want to find immediate treatment or at least conceal the ailment from being seen by others.

Diet For Leucoderma Treatment

When the patient has problems with leucoderma or is trying to avoid getting this problem, there are a few dietary changes that he/she would need to make. Here are some of the dietary suggestions that the patient might want to consider for the prevention and treatment of this ailment:

  • The patient should increase his/her intake of walnuts and figs when he/she finds white spots on the skin that may indicate the early signs of vitiligo. Walnuts and figs are said to have properties that help increase proper blood circulation. Thus, these could help cure the ailment called leucoderma.
  • A therapeutic diet that is said to remove toxins from the body is suggested as a cure for this problem. The patient can start off with an all fruit juice diet that lasts for a week. Try to take juices that are made from fresh fruit and not concentrated ones and try to avoid citrus juices as much as possible. After this week fast of juices, the patient should follow this with a diet that consists of whole wheat bread, wheat tortillas, steamed or raw vegetables and fresh fruits.

Foods To Avoid Vitiligo

  • The patient should also avoid eating too many seafoods like crabs, lobsters, shrimps, and prawns.
  • Also, he/she must try to avoid eating too many citrus type fruits like oranges, limes, and grapefruit if he/she is prone to vitiligo.
