In the past, when scurvy was first noted among sailors, it was generally understood that the illness was mainly a dietary disease. They believed that it was either caused by the absence of an essential food element or by a harmful substance in their diet.
After a while, it was pointed out that it was the lack of vitamin C that caused the illness.
When scrutinized further, it was seen that while scurvy is generally caused by vitamin C deficiency, there are a number of factors that bring about this lack of nutrients. Here are some of them:
- Insufficient intake of fresh vegetables and fruits
- Mental Stress
- Inflammatory Diseases
- Frequent exposure to the cold or heat
- Physical Stress
Aside from these factors, it was also found out that people who were staying in famine-stricken areas were bound to get scurvy. This is because of the insufficiency of their diet due to lack of proper food.
So to make sure that you won’t get scurvy, it is best that you take in enough vitamin C every day, either through taking in a supplement or by eating foods rich with it.
