White Spots after Tanning

Exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause a long list of skin problems. One of the most common problems is the appearance of white spots. These spots usually appear on areas that are constantly exposed like the shoulders, arms, face, and back.

Causes of White Spots after Tanning

  • Low levels of melanin in the skin.

    Melanin is responsible for imparting color to the skin and protects it from harsh ultraviolet rays of the sun or from tanning beds. When a patient does not have an adequate amount of melanin in the skin, he or she is at risk of developing white spots after prolonged exposure to ultraviolet rays. Production of melanin is also greatly affected from too much sun exposure or other sources of ultraviolet rays.

  • Tinea Versicolor. This is a skin condition caused by a fungal infection. The condition generally does not allow sun’s rays to properly penetrate the skin resulting in an uneven tan, sunburn, and white spots.

  • Vitiligo. Sunburn or too much sun exposure can trigger the development of vitiligo. This is a condition wherein skin cells lose the ability to produce adequate melanin levels.

  • Medications. There are certain medications that make a patient’s skin sensitive to ultraviolet rays. A good example is birth control pills.

  • Overactive sweat glands.

  • Pressure points. This is a common cause for those patients who love using tanning beds. A patient’s position inside a tanning bed creates a decrease in circulation to a number of pressure points that are found on shoulder blades, elbow, hipbones, or parts that have constant contact. These parts form white spots.

  • Idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis. This is a genetic disorder that causes skin discoloration.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of White Spots after Tanning Skin

  • If the spots are caused by a fungal infection, anti-fungal creams and ointments that can be easily bought over-the-counter can be applied on the affected area. Medicated creams that are prescribed by a dermatologist can also be applied.

  • Maintaining proper hygiene and keeping the skin dry while tanning can help.

  • Use quality skin creams and tanning lotions.

  • Stay hydrated by drinking good amounts of water, juices, and herbal teas. Ginger, cucumber and cabbage concoctions have been proven to be very effective in removing these spots.

  • Eat fruits and vegetables. Doing so can keep the skin healthy and protect it from infections and skin disorders.

  • Keep skin moisturized with lotions and massage oils. It is best to use products that are rich in vitamin E and those that contain alpha hydroxyl acids.

  • Patients can also apply black gram powder or a mixture of honey, rice, turmeric powder, and sandalwood powder on the affected area.

  • It is good to stop tanning and too much exposure to ultraviolet rays.

  • For severe cases, oral medications are prescribed.
