Snoring Information, Facts
Snoring is a recognized medical condition. It is characterized by a sound that the patient makes due to the obstruction of the air movement as he or she breathes during sleeping. It occurs only during sleeping so that a lot of people are unaware that they snore unless this is pointed out by someone who has observed him or her sleep.
Snoring is more prevalent in men than women. Still, that does not mean that all men snore. Only about 30 to 50% of the total population snore, men and women alike. Often, people who snore will most likely do so when they are sleeping on their backs. Thus, they are encouraged to sleep on their sides to minimize the incidences of snoring.
There are a number of reasons why people snore. One of the most common is throat weakness caused by a variety of reasons, including smoking. It is also possible that the throat is already coated in fat, making breathing quite difficult especially when the patient is asleep, thus, causing snoring. Other reasons why snoring occurs include tonsillitis, obstructive sleep apnea, and a mispositioned jaw.
