Throat Dryness Symptoms: What Are Its Causes And Home Remedies?

Dryness in the throat is a relatively common condition which affects individuals especially during cold and wet weathers. Dry throat is often accompanied with other systemic symptoms like cough, nasal discharge and body ache. Throat dryness is a transient and temporary condition which is associated with change in weather. While in most cases dryness of throat may resolve spontaneously in other cases treatment may be required.   • Body ache and muscle ache with fatigue and weakness are common systemic symptoms.

  • Tonsil related problems like infection, abscess or tumor may obstruction the secretion of saliva from the salivary glands resulting in dryness of the throat.
  • Sjogren’s syndrome is a unique autoimmune disease which affects the ability of the salivary glands to produce moist saliva resulting in dryness in the throat and mouth. Often this disease is associated with rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
  • Improper breathing is considered to be one of the leading causes of dryness in the throat. Breathing through the mouth may result in loss of moisture from the mouth resulting in dryness in the throat.
  • Salivary gland cancer, though relatively rare, interferes with the production of saliva by the salivary gland which in turn can lead to dryness in the throat.

Home Remedies For Throat Dryness

Here are some simple home remedies that my help in the management of throat dryness promptly,

  • Warm salt water gargle is considered to be very beneficial in treating dry throat. Warm water helps in improving blood circulation, while salt is alkaline which in turn stimulates the production of saliva from the salivary glands.
  • As per Mayo Clinic, hot honey and lemon tea is very beneficial in management of dry throat. Honey has strong anti-microbial properties and has a soothing effect on the mucus membrane, while lemon is loaded with vitamin c and stimulates the production of saliva by the salivary glands.
  • Using humidifiers, sucking on lozenges and drinking a glass of water before going to bed are some other techniques to prevent dryness of the throat.
