Lobster Allergy Symptoms
Shellfish allergy is one of the most common allergies found in adults. It is very important to identify allergies as it could cause serious complications including anaphylactic shock.
- Lobster and shellfish allergies usually start in adulthood
- They can happen to someone who has no history of food allergies
- When a person is allergic to lobster, they are most likely allergic to other types of shellfish
- It is important for patients to inform their doctors of such allergies especially when undergoing procedures like surgery and when they are being prescribed medications.
- Skin tests can be done to determine if a patient is indeed allergic to lobster and other shellfish.
Red Lobster Allergy Symptoms
The symptoms of an allergic reaction to lobster usually starts mild and will progress with increased exposure to the allergen.
Symptoms to watch out for include:
- Tingling in mouth
- Itchiness
- Lobster allergy rash – most likely comes in the form of very itchy hives
- Swelling of mouth
- Swelling of face
- Swelling of tongue
- Swelling of other body parts
- Wheezing
- Coughing
- Congestion
- Difficulty breathing
- Vertigo
- Syncope
An allergy to lobster can also cause a patient to have an anaphylactic reaction. This is a severe reaction that is life threatening. Signs include:
- Swollen throat that closes air passage
- Shock – resulting from a rapid drop in blood pressure
- Rapid heart rate/Rapid pulse
- Loss of consciousness
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness
In some instances, when a patient reports lobster allergy vomiting, it could be a sign of food poisoning than it is of an allergic reaction as food poising is common in shellfish.
Treatment
- The best treatment for a lobster allergy is avoidance. Patients should keep away from exposure to lobster and other shellfish.
- If an allergic reaction does occur, patients will be treated with drugs that help with the swelling and the itching.
- Epinephrine is also administered to patients who have gone into anaphylactic shock.
