Urticaria

Rashes on the skin that are characterized by raised wheals are called urticaria. This skin condition is often experienced when the patient was exposed to allergens that he or she is sensitive to. Still, there are also a number of non-allergic reasons that could cause urticaria to appear on the patient’s skin.

For instance, there are people who develop urticaria after application of heat on the skin. The raised rashes have the characteristics of urticaria, not burns or blisters.
The common cases of urticaria are acute, often happening immediately or just a few minutes after contact with the allergen. These could last for a few hours although there are cases when the wheals take weeks to clear out. Still, there are also cases when the patient has chronic urticaria. These are hives that persist for more than 6 weeks. In fact, there are those who have experienced several years – even more than 20 years – of urticaria. The raised rashes formed in both cases are no different from one another so that the only way to tell their difference is to consider the amount of time they have been staying on the skin.

Urticaria Prevention Measures

When the patient is looking to avoid this ailment, he or she can do a few things. As long as the patient knows what his or her triggers are, prevention can be easily done. If the patient is not sure what triggers such attacks in his or her system, he or she may need to observe what these allergens are before trying to avoid the recurrence of this problem.

  • If the patient finds that there is a break out in hives when he or she eats certain foods, it is best to try to avoid them. Try to ask what is in a certain item on the menu when not sure if this contain some of the things that one is allergic to.
  • If the patient is allergic to pollen and other airborne elements that are usually present during spring, try to protect self from hives by avoiding going out when these are in the air, usually early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Close the windows and doors during these times as well to prevent these from getting into the home, too. If there is really a need to go out, it is best to wear a mask.
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle to increase resistance to such attacks. Eat healthy, exercise, and get plenty of rest so that the body can fight off any possibility of such unwanted attacks.
