Causes Of Fluid In Uterus And The Symptoms To Look For

The uterus under normal conditions does not hold any fluid within its cavity unless there is a known pregnancy. When fluid is present in the uterus, this is usually a cause for alarm and rightly so. The danger of this condition is that many women do not even know they have fluid retention in the uterus unless discovered by a sonogram or the woman is already experiencing symptoms.

Fluid In Uterus

Fluid is usually not accumulated in the uterus, however excess of fluid flows out through the cervical opening.

  • During pregnancy, amniotic sac, which is the part of the placenta, and provides nutrition to the growing fetus, results in accumulation of amniotic fluid in the uterus? Amniotic fluid may gush out of the cervix, as a part of labor.
  • During the menstrual cycle, blood flows out of the cervix, is associated with sloughing off of endometrial layers.
  • Fluid may get accumulated in the uterus in the form of polyps or fibroids. These are non malignant conditions which may be associated with retention of fluid in the uterus. Malignant conditions of the uterus can also result in accumulation of fluid in the uterus
  • Infections, especially pelvic inflammatory disease, may result in accumulation of fluid in the uterus.
Often PID may result in inflammation of the uterine tissue, which in turn is caused due to irritation of the uterus by the bacterial agents.

Causes Of Fluid In Uterus

The cause of fluid accumulation in the uterine cavity is age-related.

    • In premenopausal women, fluid accumulation in the uterus is often associated with pregnancy, if not its complications.
    • As a woman ages, her cervix is more prone to cervical stenosis.

Menopause

    • Women found to have intra-uterine fluid accumulation are already experiencing menopause.

Previous Endometrial Ablations

    • A history of endometrial ablations can cause the cervical opening to become stenosed.

Fibroids or Tumors

    • The presence of fibroid or benign tumors in the uterine wall has also been found to cause the constriction of the cervical opening.

Foreign body like intra uterine devices, meant to control pregnancy, may get infected and result in accumulation of fluid in the uterus

Fluid In Uterus Symptoms

Some women with intra-uterine fluid accumulation may remain asymptomatic. Some patients present with symptoms such as:

  • Uterine fluid accumulation as seen on a sonogram.
  • Pelvic pain resulting from the accumulated fluids in the uterus. This condition is often associated with Pelvic pressure or feeling of heaviness in the uterus or lower abdomen.
  • Feeling of abdominal fullness along with abdominal cramps and bloating may also be observed.
  • Respiratory affectations such as difficulty breathing or shortness of breath along with systemic symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, etc may be observed
  • Fluid accumulation in the uterus may often be associated with foul and offensive discharge, often referred to as leucorrhea.

I am 35 years old. I had a pelvic inflammatory disease. The doctor told me that I had fluid in my uterus due to prolonged birth control pills which I have been taking. I have been trying to conceive for some time now. Does PID cause infertility?

I have vaginal bleeding for the last one and a half months. I have done sonography of pelvis. The report mentioned “Small fluid collection at the uterine cavity”. I have tried several doctors. I felt better after taking medicines but again it has started bleeding for the last few days. My doctor told me that it is my monthly menses. But I am worried that I will not be normal after this cycle. Is there any danger to my health?

As your doctor has suggested the bleeding to be that of normal menstrual cycle, wait for few days for it to stop. Sometimes hormonal changes may also cause abnormal bleeding. If the bleeding persists for prolonged period than usual menstrual period, consult a gynecologist. Do you have any other symptoms such as pain in pelvic region, urine problem etc?

I am 42 years old. I have been experiencing pelvic pain and pain while passing urine. There is also dark discharge. I visited the gynaecologist and did an ultrasound. There is fluid in my uterus and irritation of the vulva. The doctor said that it might be due to eruption of cyst. I also have IC so it is difficult for me to distinguish what the problem could be. How do I treat this problem?

Since you are suffering from interstitial cystitis (IC), it is difficult to distinguish whether your problem is related to urinary tract or due to a gynec problem. Your doctor will recommend certain tests to which will help to distinguish the same. Meanwhile, maintain vaginal hygiene regularly. Wash the area with water while bathing. Eat yogurt as it contain healthy bacteria.

I am 28 and started vomiting a lot since 8 weeks. My periods were 8 days late. I have minor cramps with clots during periods. I have gained weight; breasts have enlarged with milk coming out from the nipples. My family physician says there is a growth in the uterus. And according to my gynecologist, there is fluid collection in uterus. He is not sure of the cause of milk discharge.

As you have consulted your doctors they must have ruled out pregnancy if you are sexually active. However, for assurance you can do tests such as sonogram of pelvis which will help in the diagnosis of growth in uterus, whether it is a fetus or something else. As regarding milk discharge from breast, if pregnancy is ruled out, there may be other causes. You have to consult a physician who will recommend certain tests to check certain hormone levels in your body.
