A bunion also known as hallux valgus, is a deformity of the big toe. As the bunion enlarges, pain develops. One of the commonest causes is wearing tight shoes. Foot injury or foot trauma triggers bunion formation as well. Bunions also form in a flat-footed person.
Pain, swelling, tenderness and inflammation are chief manifestations of a bunion.
Causes of Bunions
- Tight fitting or ill fitting shoes are the most common cause for bunions. High heels and cowboy boots greatly damage the toes. Pointed toe shoes are bad too; they squeeze the toes together.
- Injury or trauma to the foot triggers bunion formation too.
- Genetics too plays a pivotal role, bunions run in the family.
- Arthritis is another important cause.
Home Remedies For Bunions
- Use padding over the bunion, it allays pressure, pain and tenderness.
- Ice application alleviates swelling and inflammation.
- Bunion shields, bunion bandages and bunion night splints are also recommended.
- Experts advocate massaging the foot; it will reduce pain, tenderness and swelling appreciably.
- Hot compresses at regular intervals provide relief too.
- Soak your feet in hot water; this is the most effective and soothing home remedy.
- Wear running shoes during a bunion flare up (i.e. pain, tenderness, redness and swelling). Running shoes provide ample room for the toes and are soft too.
- Avoid wearing heels and tights shoes.
- Soak your foot daily in hot water, to which some Epsom salts are added. Epsom salts ameliorate pain and swelling speedily.
Natural Cures For Bunions
- Hot moist compresses are decidedly beneficial as well. They make the skin soft, ease pain, increase blood flow, and allay tenderness.
- Alternate ice application also helps. It quickly relieves swelling and inflammation. Use an ice pack 3 to 4 times every day.
- Wear sandals. Sandals are comfortable, and take pressure off the bunion.
- Place toe separators in between the big toe and the second toe.
- Massages are wonderful. Get a foot massage once a week. The reflexology points get stimulated, circulation of blood to the toes gets enhanced, and pain and inflammation decreases considerably. Using essential oils such as lavender and juniper berry is recommended.
Exercises For Bunions
- Hold the big toe with 1 hand and the foot with the other. Gently pull the toe upwards and hold for 10 seconds. Thereafter, twist it gently clockwise, then anti clockwise.
- With the feet on the floor, loop a rubber band around both big toes. Gently, pull the toes away from each other. Hold for 10 seconds. Next, place the rubber band around all the toes, and spread them out.
- Keeping the heels on the floor, pick up a towel with the toes.
- Place your fingers in between the toes of your feet. Thus, fan out the toes. Hold for sometime and release.
