Muscle twitching in the legs or anywhere in the body can occur and continue unnoticed. Most of these are considered benign symptoms that can go away without any intervention and caused by simple day to day activities. There are some cases though that uncontrollable twitching is caused by a serious medical condition like a disorder in the nervous system.

  • Muscular dystrophy. This is a disorder that is genetically transferred and can cause weakening of the muscles over time.

  • Spinal muscular atrophy. This is a genetic disorder that attacks the nerve cells that are found in the spinal cord. These nerves are the ones that send signals to voluntary muscles that are located in the arms and legs. When these are affected, it can cause the muscles to weaken which will lead to twitching and often times difficulties in walking.

  • Myopathy or the condition that brings about total weakening of the muscles.

How to Stop Twitching Leg Muscles

  • Taking mineral supplements like potassium, calcium, magnesium. These minerals help bring back proper neuromuscular function and prevent cramps.

  • Drinking lots of water.

  • Application of hot packs on affected muscles.

  • Gentle massages on the affected area.

  • Botox injections can help but can cause bruising of the targeted muscles.

  • B vitamins like vitamin B12 can be taken in as supplements. Patients can choose foods that are rich with these kinds of vitamins.

  • There are natural remedies that can help stop leg muscle twitching like chamomile, passion flower, hops, lady’s flower, and skullcap. These can be made into tinctures or tea. These work just like a sedative for the nervous system that calms the muscle twitching.
