How to Reverse and Prevent Gingivitis Naturally at Home

Dental health does not mean caring for the teeth only. Dental health involves caring for all structures present in the oral cavity including the teeth, gums, tongue, and buccal cavity. Infection of any of these structures can easily cause infection of the gums hence causing Gingivitis. Studies show that a staggering 75% of the population experience Gingivitis at some point of their lives – a startling figure that many in the population still do not know about.

Gingivitis is defined as the inflammation of the gums. Its characteristic symptoms include change in gum color from pink to red, swelling, bleeding, tenderness and sensitivity. These symptoms are caused by the buildup of bacteria on the gums which causes the body’s immune system to respond destroying the pathogens, affecting the gums at the same time.

  • Always use a good toothbrush. A good option is an electric toothbrush because it does a better job than manual brushing. Use a toothbrush with medium bristles because soft bristles cannot effectively clean while hard bristles can irritate already irritated gums.

  • Brush at least two to three times in a day and brush effectively using fluoride toothpaste. Divide the teeth into four quarters and dedicate 30-45 seconds brushing each quadrant. Include the tongue and the buccal cavity when brushing.

  • Use an oral irrigator to help flush any food particles left in between teeth. This should be done 1-2 times in a day.

  • If brushing cannot be done between meals, the best alternative is to chew sugar-free gum. This increases saliva production which helps wash bacteria away.

  • Continued observance of this routine will yield results in a few weeks such as lesser bleeding, decreased sensitivity, and tightening of teeth within their sockets.

How to Reverse Gingivitis Naturally at Home

Home treatment has been shown to reverse milder forms of gingivitis. These treatments involve a good balance of oral hygiene, healthy diet, and healthy lifestyle.

  • Regular brushing of the teeth twice a day.

  • Flossing the teeth to help remove plaque buildup in between teeth.

  • Eat a healthy diet with foods rich in vitamin C and D.

  • Eat cranberries or drink sugar free cranberry juice. Cranberry has naturally occurring antimicrobial properties.

  • Drink tea tree oil. This also possesses antimicrobial properties.

  • Chew sugar free gums in between meals to increase the production of saliva that can help wash bacteria and prevent build-up.

  • Eat raw fruits and vegetables because this naturally cleans in between teeth.

  • Irrigate in between teeth using a solution of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and very hot water.

  • Eat foods that are rich in Coenzyme Q10. This contains antioxidants that can help repair damaged gum tissue.
