Corn on Hands
Corn on hands is a type of callus. Callosity develops as a protective mechanism against repeated trauma or irritation. The outermost skin layer thickens after frequent exposure to pressure. Callus usually develops on areas with bony prominences, or areas which are prone to friction, such as hands, elbows, knees, and feet.
These are usually caused by normal daily activities. For example, shoes that do not fit well may lead to development of callus on the edges of the small toes. Corn on hands, unlike other calluses, is characterized by tiny, raised bumps either on the side or over the joints of the fingers. These are usually a few millimeters in diameter and have a solid center. Individuals at risk include carpenters, guitar players, writers, or occupations which involve pressure on the hands.
How to Remove a Corn on Hand
There is no need to remove corn on hand as this will not lead to an infection. A common reason why people want calluses removed is to facilitate the growth of new skin cells. Others simply want calluses removed for aesthetic purposes. Whatever the reason may be, there are different procedures an individual can do at home to remove a corn on hand. These include:
- Pumice stone. Rubbing the pumice stone against the thickened area can aid in peeling the accumulation of dead skin cells. It is best to soak the hand in warm water before peeling, as this softens the callus. However, patients diagnosed with diabetes should avoid this as it can cause abrasions.
- Metal nail file. The principle behind it works much like pumice stone. The file is used to smooth the irregularities on the skin.
- Natural moisturizers. Calendula herbal cream or oil not only softens the skin, but also prevents skin cracking. Other noteworthy ingredients include lactic acid, which can also be used to soften corn on hands.
- Castor oil. A cotton ball soaked in castor oil can be applied over the affected area prior to bedtime. It can also serve as an overnight remedy by placing a bandage over the cotton ball and affected finger.
- Wear gloves. These protective gears should be worn prior to activities such as weight lifting.
