Causes of Dry Elbows: Remedies To Get Rid Of Dry Skin On Elbows

Occasionally, your elbows do not get as much care and attention as other body parts given their location. They also face a lot of stress when propped on desks, chair arms, and tables. Consequently, you are left with dry, rough and neglected elbows.

Dry elbows are typically characterized by dryness and flaking of the skin, along with redness, itching, cracks, and sometimes infection and bleeding.

Elbows are one of the most neglected areas of your skin; however, just with a little bit of care, you can have soft and smooth elbows.

What Causes Dry Skin On Elbows?

The following are the most common causes for dryness and itching of the elbows:

  • Climate: If it’s very cold or too hot, it will affect your skin. Even alteration in room climate, like shifts in air conditioning and heating, causes a lot of dryness.
  • Soaps: Your bathing products will affect the quality of your skin to a very great extent. If you use harsh soaps the skin will lose its natural oils which prevent dehydration and make the skin dry and dull.

  • Medical Conditions: Like atopic dermatitis or psoriasis is known to cause dryness and itching of the elbows.
  • Excessive use of the elbows: Leaning on your elbows whilst sitting at a table to propping yourself adversely affects the elbows.

Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Dry Elbows

The following home remedies are exceedingly helpful in managing dry and calloused elbows:

  • Lime and yogurt: Mix the juice of half a lime with a spoonful of yogurt and gently massage the elbows. Leave on for about an hour. Repeat daily. This will soothe dry, itchy and calloused elbows quickly leaving the skin smooth.
  • Avocado oil: Avocadoes are packed with vitamin E. The oil is loaded with a lot of essential nutrients along with vitamin E which helps seal in moisture and keep the elbows satiny. Massage the oil and leave overnight. For quick results add an essential oil such as lavender or bergamot. Blend 2 drops of the essential oil with 5 drops of the avocado oil and massage.
  • Cocoa butter: Cocoa butter is an excellent lubricant. Use daily as a moisturizer. It helps soften and lubricate dry elbows.
  • Honey: Honey is another wonderful home remedy for dry lifeless skin. First exfoliate the elbows using a good scrub; you could do it twice a week. Then wash off and apply honey over your elbows. Leave on for 15 minutes then rinse.
  • Milk and lime: Blend together 5 spoons of lime juice with 5 spoons of milk. Keep for 10 minutes till it curdles, then apply over the affected area and let it stay for an hour. This mixture nourishes your skin and prevents dehydration.
  • Brown sugar: Brown sugar is an excellent exfoliant. It gets rid of dead cells around your elbows and banishes callous. Massage the area gently daily for a week. And follow this up with moisturization.
  • Aloe: Aloe has been touted as a wonderful and very effective moisturizer. Yu could use aloe gels or creams readily available in the market or extract the natural gel from an aloe leaf. Aloe soothes, tones and moisturizes the skin successfully, leaving it looking healthy.
