Liver spots on face are common among fair skinned individuals over the age of 40. Liver spots are brown or black flat spots on the skin, especially present on the exposed parts of the body such as on the back of the hand, arm, neck, and face. The medical name for liver spots is Lentigo senilis or solar lentigens.
However, liver spots are in no way connected to liver or liver diseases. Except for their unsightly appearance, liver spots are completely harmless and pose no risk to your health. Still many physicians may take a small biopsy of the liver spot to rule out malignancy. With growing age the number and size of liver spots may increase, usually they may grow up to the size of 1 inch.
What Causes Liver Spots On Face?
The risk of developing liver spots or age spots increases in middle age and older people.
Liver spots tend to develop on face, back of the hands, neck and arms because they are most exposed areas to sunlight. Since the spots are more common among aging and middle aged people they are also called age spots, aging is therefore considered as one of the causative factor.
Lack of dietary antioxidants can play an important role in development of age spots (liver spots).
There may be a hereditary predisposition for development of liver spots.
Lastly, there is no association of any liver malfunction or liver disease for development of liver spots. They are totally benign and harmless.
Liver Spots On Face Treatment
Liver spots are harmless, except for the psychological embarrassment they produce. In fact they require no treatment and they usually tend to fade away gradually. However, many people may not like growing number of liver spots on the exposed areas, such as face, arm and other body parts. Certain bleaching products may help to lighten the liver spots. Bleaching creams may not suit every individual and it may cause skin reaction.
Chemical skin peeling and micro-dermabrasion are other techniques used for removal of liver spots, but they have their own reservations. The best technique for removing these unwanted marks is laser therapy. With laser therapy the marks can be removed permanently. Liver spots may reappear if you do not protect yourself from sun exposure.
Natural Home Remedies For Age Spots
Those who believe in home remedies and alternative therapies, there are several effective home remedies that can be beneficial in removing liver spots, and that too without any side effects. They are inexpensive as compared to other treatments. Liver spots take years to form and eliminating them takes time too. Some of the natural home remedies are:
- Aloe vera gel: aloe vera is considered to be a healing agent for any skin problem. Similarly aloe vera gel or juice is found to be effective in fading the liver spots. Apply aloe vera gel or juice on the affected area two times in a day for at least one to two months. You can notice the improvement within two months.
- Buttermilk: butter milk is used since generations as a skin cleaner and as a beauty aid. Dab buttermilk on the spots. The lactic acid present in buttermilk is beneficial in reducing the visual appearance of liver spots.
- Castor oil: apply castor oil on the liver spots regularly for two months, two times in a day. You have to rub it well into the skin. After about two months you will find liver spots fading.
- Fresh lemon juice: apply fresh lemon juice on the spots. The acid present in lemon juice helps in fading the spots. Be sure you are not going out in the sun within one hour after applying lemon juice on the spots as lemon juice is known to increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. It may take a month, but eventually the spots may fade and it may be difficult to spot them.
Besides home remedies, take precaution while you are going out in sun. Apply sunscreen half hour before going out in sun. You can also use an umbrella to cover your face and hands.
Avoid junk food, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Include beta carotene in your diet; eat foods rich in beta carotene such as carrots, spinach, pumpkin, cauliflower and mangoes.
Also consume vitamin E rich foods such as almonds, pistachios, soy beans, groundnuts etc. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and it is an effective aid for maintaining healthy skin.
