Sunburn is a common word used for the discoloration of the skin. However, people do not realize that although it is likely to happen when staying out too long under the sun, it can cause severe damage to the skin. People have the wrong notion about having tan colored skin to be healthy.

This causes people to expose under the sun even more to attain the desired tan without knowing the bad after effect it brings.

Suntan refers to the condition of the discoloration of the skin due to over exposure towards the sun. It can also come from getting a tan from a tanning machine such as a sunlamp. By exposing under the sun’s heat, the skin gets darkened to light brown or reddish-brown color. However, peeling occurs after a few days which can be itchy and damaging. It causes the skin to get intensely dry and thin making it prone to bacteria that can cause skin cancer.

Suntan or sun bathing gets every person’s skin darker or tanned.

This is often done by people who have pale white skin to obtain a rosy glow. However, due to hazards of over exposure to the sun, the skin peels off and becomes damaged. Basking under sunshine can give you Vitamin D but excessively exposing under the sun causes the skin to burn and peel off. Suntan peeling usually occurs a few days after getting a sun-burnt skin.

Home Remedies for Suntan Peeling

To be able to stop suntan peeling, a person who loves to bathe under the heat of the sun may follow the following remedies:

  • Stop continuously exposing the skin under the sun while the skin is burned since it can cause severe damage to the skin.

  • Use suntan lotion to replenish dead skin cells that were burned from the UV rays of the sun.

  • Aloe Vera can also be applied to the burned skin.

  • Avoid forcibly peeling the skin especially when it has not yet dried off. Allow it to peel by itself to prevent making scars on the skin.

  • To relax the burnt skin, a cool shower can alleviate the burning sensation.

  • Use thin or cool clothes on the sunburned skin so that less friction will occur against the skin.

  • Stay in a cool, well ventilated room and take adequate rest.

  • Keep hydrated by drinking enough water and fluids with electrolytes.

  • Calamine lotion can also reduce the itching.

  • Apply vinegar and apple cider on the skin as these can give relief.

  • Soak a clean piece of cloth in cold milk and dab it on the skin. Let it stay for 20 minutes and rinse off with cool water.

  • Use antibacterial soap to prevent infection.
