Bladder infection is an ailment that affects more women than men; however, some men do experience this at some point in their lives. The reason for the common occurrence of this ailment is that the bladder and the urinary tract are involved in the filtering of liquid wastes. Women have shorter urinary tracts and so, are more prone to developing these infections.

Women should watch out for the following symptoms that could signal bladder infection:

  • Pain during and after intercourse.
  • Burning sensation or sharp pain during urination
  • Oftentimes, even if the urge to urinate is high, only small amounts of urine are passed at a given time.
  • Also, the urine may be tinged with blood and could be foul smelling due to pus.
  • There is also soreness in the lower back, lower abdomen, or at the sides.
  • Inability to empty the bladder fully. This could be felt with the urge to urinate without producing more urine. The remaining urine in the bladder could be detected via ultrasound.

What are Signs of a Bladder Infection in Women

Bacteria are the main culprit for causing the infection. These bacteria could be introduced in different ways, oftentimes through sexual intercourse. The following are some of the signs of bladder infection:

  • Painful abdomen.
  • Sudden urge to urinate but difficulty in passing urine.
  • Painful urination characterized by a burning sensation.
  • Presence of bacteria in the urine.
  • Urine that remains in the bladder after urination – or the inability to fully empty the bladder.

Home Remedies for Bladder Infection in Women

Possible home remedies that can be used to counter bladder infections include the following:

  • Pineapple – juice and fruit.
  • Cranberries and blueberries – berries or unsweetened juice.
  • Yogurt.
  • Oregon grape root.
  • Baking soda.
  • Aromatherapy.

Aside from these options, it is also great to:

  • Increase intake of fluids such as water but juices can also be a good option. However, it is best to stay away from carbonated drinks.
  • Eating fruits and supplements rich in vitamin C.
  • Do not delay urination. This is actually one of the main reasons why bladder infections occur as bacteria easily proliferate in stocked urine.
  • Always have clean genitals when having sexual intercourse as bacteria can be easily introduced unto the opening of the urinary tract.
